A FUN DISCUSSION FROM THE CREATIVE MIND OF SISTER TERESA CATHERINE HILL ~~ IF YOU COULD HAVE A DREAM DINNER AND INVITE ANYONE (LIVING OR DECEASED) WHO WOULD YOU PUT ON YOUR GUEST LIST AND WHY? NAME 5 TO 10 PEOPLE!!
Deborah Young asked: "Galen do you or anybody remember why the school colors were changed? Was it maybe too hard to find/get the Crimson and Grey colors?" That's a good question to start a discussion on.
To my knowledge the school colors were never officially changed, it was just the displayed colors on uniforms and award jackets that varied.
We still sing in our Booker T. Washington Alma Mater, "Gray and Crimson we adore ...".
I recall seeing Red and Gray BTW letter jackets in the neighborhood all of my pre-BTW days until about 1960. After that, and certainly after my September 1961 8th grade enrollment at BTW, I never recall seeing gray in an award jacket again. It was either red and white, or solid red as my '66 varsity track jacket was.
It seems that most schools who state their colors as "crimson", like the colleges Harvard and Alabama, actually use a slightly-darker than medium red color like ours on their team uniforms and in published school materials. I've never seen on any teams colors the same "crimson" that comes up in my web graphics work, which looks like (as the Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it) a "deep purplish-red".
Help us out .... What do YOU think -- or know -- about the history of our school colors??
After seeing the movie "The Help" I became upset and just fair mad until I thought oh lord what these sisters must have endurged just to keep their families safe. They came home to their families and stood tall, strong and graceful, I remember their beautiful faces

Critical Information: Dallas City Council Redistricting Forum, 8-20-11 at 2 PM, City Council Chambers
Provided by Bill Betzen August 17th, 2011
We are now at a critical point in the Dallas City Council Redistricting process. An original plan that placed BTW and the States/Thomas area, including Freedman's Cemetery, into the Black voting age majority district (over 65% Black), City Council District 4, has been changed. States/Thomas and Freedmans Cemetary has been moved back into District 14. Is this what you would want? Does it make any difference?
Last night the Redistricting Commission narrowed down the selection to the final 3 maps. These three maps will have updates for minor amendements made last night and will be online soon. They must be available for final comment from the public this Saturday, 8-20-11, 2 PM. The plans selected are the Option 1 forms of each cPlan05a, cPlan16a, and wPlan03b which can be seen in details at http://www.dallascityhall.com/Redistricting/planReview.html. Here are some of that statistical details comparing these three plans:
As the above chart demonstrates, wPlan03b Option1, has the strongest Black representation by over 3 full percentage points! That lessens the potential for a seat to be lost. Also, since this plans is one of the most compact, it will be easier for local leaders to rise up and win elections in the more neighborhood-centered districts. As a teacher, I see this leadership potential growing in our classrooms every day. We need to pave the way for them if we can.
If you want the heart of the former Freedman's town to be in a City Council District that almost certainly be led by a Black leader who may even have ancestors burried in the holy ground of Freedmans Cemetary, please help us to both pass wPlan03b into law, and amend it so that States/Thomas area returns to be in that district.
(Note: the number for District 4 will change to a 7 in the new map Saturday, and District 7 in wPlan03b will change to 4. Do not let that confuse you. That is only happening so that both new districts continue to have some of the citizens within them that are represented in the current city council districts by that same number.)
A history of the many changes in this mapping process since April 2011 can be seen at http://dallasredistricting2011.blogspot.com/.
Please share the above post with anyone you think may be concerned about these issues here in Dallas.
Happy Birthday 2011 |

To All Crack Pots!
A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on each end of a pole, which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, and while the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water at the end of the long walk from the stream to the master's house, the cracked pot arrived only half full.
For two years this went on daily, with the bearer delivering only one and a half pots of water to his master's house. Of course, the perfect pot was proud of its accomplishments, perfect to the end for which it was made.
But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what it had been made to do.
After two years of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the water bearer one day by the stream. "I am ashamed of myself, and I want to apologize to you."
"Why?" asked the bearer. "What are you ashamed of?"
"I have been able, for these past two years, to deliver only half my load because this crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your master's house. Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don't get full value from your efforts," the pot said.
The water bearer felt sorry for the old cracked pot, and in his compassion he said, "As we return to the master's house, I want you to notice the beautiful flowers along the path."
Indeed, as they went up the hill, the old cracked pot took notice of the sun warming the beautiful wild flowers on the side of the path, and this cheered it some. But at the end of the trail, it still felt bad because it had leaked out half its load, and so again it apologized to the bearer for its failure.
The bearer then said, "I have always known about your flaw, and I took advantage of it. I planted flower seeds on your side of the path, and every day while we walk back from the stream, you've watered them. For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate my master's table. Without you being just the way you are, he would not have this beauty to grace his house."
Barefoot and dirty, the little girl just sat in the park and watched people go by. She never tried to speak, she never said a word. Many people passed, but not one person glanced her way, no one stopped, including me.
The next day I decided to go back to the park, curious if the little girl would still be there.
Right in the very spot she was yesterday, she sat perched on high, with the saddest look in her eyes But today I could not just walk away, concerned only with my affairs. I found myself walking over to the little girl. For as we all know, a park full of strange people is not a place for young children to play alone.
As I began walking towards her, I could see the back of the little girl's dress indicated a deformity. I figured that was the reason the people just passed by and made no effort to care.
As I got closer, the little girl slightly lowered her eyes to avoid my intent stare. I could see the shape of her back more clearly. It was grotesquely shaped in a humped over form.
I smiled to let her know it was okay, I was there to help, to talk. I sat down beside her and opened with a simple "hello."
The little girl acted shocked and stammered a "hi" after a long stare into my eyes. I smiled and she shyly smiled back.
We talked 'til darkness fell and the park was completely empty. Everyone was gone and we were alone. I asked the girl why she was so sad. The little girl looked at me and said, "Because I am different."
I immediately said, "That you are!" and smiled.
The little girl acted even sadder, she said, "I know."
"Little girl," I said, "you remind me of an angel, sweet and innocent."
She looked at me and smiled slowly, she stood to her feet and said "Really?"
"Yes, dear, you're like a little guardian angel sent to watch over all those people walking by."
She nodded her head, "yes,"' and smiled, and with that she spread her wings and said, "I am. I'm your guardian angel," with a twinkle in her eye.
I was speechless, sure I was seeing things.
She said, "And when you began thinking of someone other than yourself, my job here was done."
Immediately I stood to my feet and said, "Wait, so why did no one else stop to help an angel?"
She looked at me and smiled, "You're the only one who could see me," and she was gone.
With that my life was changed dramatically.
When you think you're all you have; remember, your angel is always watching over you. Mine was....

The Plan Of The Master Weaver
by Vannessa Freeman on Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at 1:38pm
The Plan Of The Master Weaver
Our lives are but fine weavings,
That God and we prepare,
Each life becomes a fabric planned
And fashioned in His care.
We may not always see just how
The weavings intertwine,
But we must trust the Master’s hand
And follow His design,
For He can view the pattern
From the upper side,
While we must look from underneath
And trust in Him to guide.
Sometimes a strand of sorrow
Is added to His plan,
And though it’s difficult for us,
We still must understand
That it’s He who fills the shuttle,
It’s He who knows what’s best,
So we must weave in patience
And leave to Him the rest…
Not till the loom is silent
And the shuttles cease to fly
Shall God unroll the canvas
And explain the reason why—
The dark threads are as needed
In the Weaver’s skillful hand
And the threads of gold and silver
In the pattern He has planned.
THIS WAS POSTED BY MY FRIEND, VANESSA FREEMAN ON FACEBOOK.... I HOPE YOU ENJOY IT AS MUCH AS I DID!!
