GALEN HAS REPORTED:
Kathlyn Gilliam, DISD's longest serving trustee of 23 years, died today after a battle with cancer. The Dallas Morning News will have a full obiturary in tomorrow's newspaper and online. Her good friend Joyce Foreman shared the news of her death in a news release below (can be found in main Lobby).
Ms Kathlyn Gilliam lived and served her comunity during the time of the Civil Rights Movement. She served relentless on DISD and many other boards, fighting for her community..Black South Dallas, residents and school children.
I can still hear her voice in my mind saying..."Carolyn, this is what I need from the radio station, Joe Bagby and Jerry Thomas"... without hesitation, I would take my notes, get her on the air with Julia Scott Reed or Bro. Joe for an interview. She was the inside person on the school board, ..she kept us informed. Her tiny voice was very recognizable and was heard over many other heavier voices in a room. She always got your attention. And sometimes that attention was directed at the radio station, KNOK, when she felt a story had not gotten the coverage it deserved. I was on the end of that conversation too. LOL!
I will remember her with highest esteem, as a great trailblazer and model of what a Proud Black Woman, looks like...
Bless you Kathlyn Gilliam, take your place in your new home, God's Kingdom!!!
