Jet Magazine....What Was Going On....

This truly is a treasure for someone interested in Black History..
THIS....

IS WAAAYYY Cool !

You can ACTUALLY see every edition of JET AND read them !!!!

This is Black American History at its best!!!

This was forwarded to me and I knew I had to share. Check it out when
you have time. This e-mail contains copies of Jet Magazine going all the
way back to 1950s copies.

Not only do you get the covers of all the issues of Jet Magazine, but
you can actually read the issues. Good tool for your children and
grandchildren.

I browsed through some of them and the emotional changes I went through
is; I don't know how to describe it. This is definitely a keeper!

The words above were written by the person who sent the email with the Jet Magazine link to me. My thoughts are the same as hers so I'll only add this:

When we received our weekly Jet Magazine it was passed around until it was pretty much falling apart. The magazine was at that time the only way we found out what was going on in the black comunity. In it we could find out what people of color (Negroes back then) would be on TV/radio that week among other things

After browsing through the first Jet I found myself thinking, "Oh my God, how far we have come". And then reminding myself that the same discrimination that Josephine Baker endured, and that black men and women are imprisoned for on trumped up charges (drugs found in back seat of police car), continues to exist in 2010 in America and elsewhere in the world.

My consolation is in knowing that God already knew that things were going to happen.

Tell me what you think, how you feel, Bulldogs.....

  • Negros, Black People endured so many injustices but thank God He sits high but looks low.

Thanks for your comment but most of all thanks for that word from the Lord. It amazes me that our people continue to multiply and prosper in spite of all of the injustices that they continue to endure. But God........
  • The JET Magazines are really true Black History. I enjoyed looking at them. I did remembered some of them. We have to know where we came from in order to enjoy where we are now. Many Colored, Negros, Black People endured so many injustices but thank God He sits high but looks low. May He continue to bless and keep all of my fellow BTWs.
  • Thanks for the corporate ("we") forgiveness on behalf of all the ladies, Cassie. Want to know the truth though about those 'beautiful young ladies'? (Mine anyway...And I promise you I'm serious.) While I'm not taking anything away from the Jet ladies, I truly felt there was greater beauty (mountains more) at Booker T. and the neighborhoods of Booker T.'s students than those who appeared in Jet's centerfold. I guess it was just a guy thing with that centerfold positioning and usually "brief" (shall we say) clothing that made checking it out "a thing to do". I'm sure Jet knew that, too. :-)
  • SOUNDS LIKE THE OLE 'CENTERFOLD", it must have been hard on u guys cause there were some beautiful young ladies. We forgive you!
  • I guess it's time to confess .... I used to flip straight to the middle and turn the book sideways ... then read the rest of the great information. Somebody knows what I mean. Well, .......... I was slipping into teen years ..... puberty and all ....... etc. ......... :)
  • Charles, There's lots of info on the Ebony website. Johnson Pyblishing Co. must have decided early on that they would be involved and stay involved in the community. Gotta admire them for that. Right now I think maybe I'm in the beginning stages of information overload. lol :)
  • Bonita, take a look at how Johnson Publishing continue to improve and reflect the news of the national community......coincidently TSU is part of the featured

  • Charles, I believe that just like the generations after ours don't understand the rich history of Booker T, they also haven't realized the huge contributions that our people made to this country. As far as the "Pants on the ground" phenomenon my ancestors would have been appalled. They would have called it "undignified" among other things.

I'm thankful to the Johnson Publishing Co. for making Jet available to us.

You reminded me that my father kept a collection of Jet Magazine and Playboy.
  • Cassie, Someone sent the email to me and I'm surprised that I kept it. I don't save emails. Except the ones that my ♥boyfriend3♥ sends. Anyway, If you wanted to know what black folks were doing in America you couldn't find it the Morning News or the Times Herald.
  • This is Cool! As a former subscriber to Jet magazine and reader when I visited the Barber Shop, it did give us a journal of weekly news and events. This would give our younger friends(kids) a closer insight of how we in our communities across America kept Hope Alive. They won't find any photos of "PANTS ON THE GROUND" anywhere.
THANKS BONITA......Now I've got to figure what to do the past issues of Jet magazines I have in storage!
