How many times was THIS sung onstage at night-time talent shows in the auditorium back in the day? Written by the one and only Curtis Mayfield.
Remember that BTW 'talent show' group with Ted Lynch, Rodney Morgan and the Dabney brothers on guitars, whose trademark was this song and a few like it?
And walking home in the dark after the night shows we didn't have to worry about drive-bys and wearing the right colors either, just who was trying to steal whose girlfriend. Man what a time!
Bobie, as much as I'm glad about the grades and GPA, I kind of wish I'd traded a zero or two for two fun Friday nights dancing at the Rec. ;) Oh well ... thank God for all of our shared memories. I went to enough other things at the Rec (youth Bible sessions, a Christmas program it seems, etc.) that I can imagine pretty well the fun and flavor of the dances.
I had a young gent that would call me up and play I'VE BEEN TRYING..Beautiful song even today. CURTIS was and is the man of music to me. The last album he made before he died is the bomb.
Galen, I read your comment about loving the Jects vs Highland Park.
As a teenager living in Arlington Park, I wanted my parents to sell our house and move to the projects, I couldn't understand why we couldn't move there...I JUST WANTED TO BE IN THE PROJECTS, because it seemed they had all the fun... they were groupies.
All of which I missed, Chuck! I can't imagine missing every dance at The Rec but I guess I did. Bonita told me about them and all I could wonder out loud was "Where was I and why didn't I hear about them before they happened!!?"
I worked most of every Summer from 8th grade through 12th, and usually at night ... so that may be the answer. But I thought to myself, as much as I LOVED life in the project(s) (back then I would choose it over Highland Park, for real) I should have made some of the Rec's dances. Well at least I made most sock hops at Booker T. that I could, and wallflowered a lot of those - but they were so much fun it was "worth the wall"!
