Galen, I recently started doing a little research, and discovered 4 people in their 90's, and 1 person getting ready to be 89 years old, who all graduated from Booker T. Washington in the "1930's" are alive and doing well.  To me, that is remarkable!

These are former students of our school, and a part of the beginning history of "BOOKER T. WASHINGTON TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL.

These beautiful people are all still very active and living life to the fullest; some are even still driving. They are from the classes of "1932, 1934, 1936, 1938 & 1939."

To my knowledge, there are no (living) graduates from any of the 1920's classes.

Here are the names:

Ms. Margaret (Garmon) Thomas, Age 96, "Class of 1932." (BTWAA Member).

Mrs. Lauren Bessie (Carroll)-Mays, Age 95, "Class of 1934."  (Cecil Brown's Mom).

Ms. Ruby (Walker) McNeary, Age 93, "Class of 1936, (Still driving).

Mr. Hillery Stell, Age 90, "Class of 1938." (My GodParent & still driving).

Mr. William "Bill" Blair, Age 89, (On Oct 17), Class of 1939. (Still driving).

Former member of the "Old Negro League Baseball Team.

It should be incumbent upon us to honor & recognize these remarkable people in some manner.  I would like to suggest all of their pictures be placed in the display case over at Booker T., since memorabilia is currently being collected for that purpose.

  • I just learned that my Aunt Doris King, will be attending the 1961 Class Reunion this month.  My cousin Cassandra Hall-Jackson invited her.
  • Is Ms.Cowan the same lady who made the drill team uniforms back in 1950's?
It was Louise Cowens (sister of Edward and Ila Cowens) who made the drill team uniforms back in the 1950's.
  • What a blessing that God has bless the class members to still be here with us! Sherri(Burch)Rand
  • Very good idea.

    Rose Mary,

I would like to add my aunt Ila Cowens Brewster's name to the list of remarkable people who graduated from BTW and are doing well. Here is the link to her BTW page:

    https://btwdallas.ning.com/profile/IlaCowansBrewster

She is quite active in San Francisco where she lives. She is a member of the Washington-Lincoln Alumni Assoc., she's on the board of the association for her townhouse, she still sings in choir at the church she attends. She drives a car that she inherited from her brother (Edward Lavon Cowens) when he died.

It was about five (5) years ago that she earned her certificate in a class that she took at the Seniors Center. She has learned to send and check her email and frequently surfs the net. Unfortunately, her computer was tampered with recently by someone who was only there to add updates to her computer but caused it to lose everything.

She participated in the Ambassadors and the pep squad at Booker T. Her school principal was L.V. Williams. She graduated in 1935 and she will be ninety-three (93) years old this year!. The last time she was in this area was for the Friendship West Anniversary for Pastor Freddy Haynes111. I don't think she'll make it for the reunion but I know that she will appreciate any memorabilia she receives.

Your idea to aknowledge these beautiful people is wonderful. Thanks for all you do!
  • Doris Ware-King graduated from BTW in 1944.  She was in the pep squad, and later a cheerleader.
  • Oh, I would like to recommend her name to be added to this list of distinguished BTW alumni.
  • This is good information, and a great idea.  My aunt Doris R. (Ware) King, is 85 years old this month.  She graduated from Booker T., not sure what year, but she is a historian.  She has shared her set-up of African American inventions all over Dallas and the suburbs.
  • Ms Rose, I too second the motion and would like to suggest: Mrs Sykes, who directed the Ambassador Choir at BTW, and appears to be fairing quite well in her 90's....
  • Recognizing and honoring these wonderful people is such a great idea.  Glad the Class of '60 is doing this.  Wish I could join you at your reunion.
