Most of us like to stick out our chest and boast "I'm not afraid of anything"... and yet many of us are terrifed of these boxes called 'C-O-M-P-U-T-E-R-S'....why?? We are the generation that envisioned thinking machines or machine assisted manufacturing & living. Aren't we the Star Trek kids? So how did we become intimidated by these little boxes?? I had a co-worker that believed 'little men' lived in these boxes and stole the information she typed in the day before!! No, Naomi wasn't crazy...she just didn't understand. But that isn't YOU; is it? Let's talk about this....
WELL....I THINK THAT THE COMPUTER IS A WONDERFUL MEANS OF BEING ABLE TO COMMUNICATE . THE WAY YOU USE IT CAN BE PRIVATE OR PUBLIC. AND IT SAVES ON COST! AND IS IS HELPING ME TO STOP TRYING TO SAVE EVERyTHING ON PAPER. HOWEVER YOU MUST REMEMBER TO back up yo info!
I think I just found an excellent reason to become far more computer saavy. I contracted a 'fake virus' which took over my laptop. BestBuy attempted to bill me $213.00 to remove it. Now, after much negotiating, discussion, phone contact w/corporate, phone contact w/Webroot and three trips to the actual store I have my 'Buddy' back. She appears to be working fine. However, have you seen the smaller, lighter, faster notebooks? The new Tech-Age is causing us to become fickle. You can't afford to be 'faithful'. Although, I just might divorce PC for Apple.....
Well Bonita, hopefully Galen will give us some insights into the how's. I just returned two books from the library entitled Senior's Computer Basics and Senior's Computer Tips. While the books are written in everyday jargon...I realized I pretty much knew all the material they covered but I still get that anxious feeling in the pit of my stomach. I know exactly what you mean about 'breaking something'. I still have not ventured onto Facebook but then I am on several Ning based social sites, Xanga and Linked (that's enough for now).
I thought I was the only person who had a fear of the little box with sooooo much inside it. When my son (a network engineer) decided ten years ago that I must have a computer, I was more than a little intimidated. I was defensive probably because my children knew about something that I had no knowledge of. (I'm retired from USPS.) And they had to teach me. And I'm not a good student. I was afraid that I might break it until my son said, "If you break it, Mom, I'll fix it." So taking baby steps I've come a long way. The computer is now my friend. I'll never be a geek but at least I know how to do what I want to do. I pay my bills, do my banking, make word documents, shop and my best friend recently taught me how to make a movie of all of my grandaughter's pictures. I recently discovered Facebook. OMG!
Oh, I still don't know how the computer actually works. How does it keep all the information?
Hello Michele,
Thanks for the kind words regarding the contacting of my play sister Bobbie Brown. I am remaining positive but its starting to wear on me that no one seems to remember her. She was very outing going and attractive. I worried for her as a freshman. I pray she is alive and well.
As far as computers go its a sign of the times. I recently visited the google earth web site. I was amazed that My home was as clear as a bell on this free site. I'm afraid big brother is watching all of us. I googled my old neighborhood in north park and I was able to go down my street with ease. People should still be careful with disclosng personal information on the internet.
Personally, I have a love/hate relationship with computers. My Dad introduced us during 1983. He bought this cute little Timex-Sinclair computer. He replaced it a few weeks later with a Commodore 64. In other words my family should be Computer Whiz(es). Well, we aren't!! I've slaved away at a terminal for 18 yrs and I don't pretend to know 'html or even Basic language' I am not a WebMaster. There's a disconnect!! Like many people I have a gut-level fear. I am afraid that I am going to screw something up, It'll crash, never to be 'right again'. Come on folks...when you think about how much these things cost..It gets scary! Now, I love the color blue--but not on a computer screen. Nothing and I mean nothing...not even a Texas Rattler has struck such fear in my gut! I am reluctant to use my credit card & order anything and yet I'll call a complete stranger at a store and give up all kinds of vital information. I spend hrs laughing at YouTube and finding the answers to all those questions I was too embarrassed to ask anyone...but I still am not going to use the Money program to pay bills & balance my checkbook. I just haven't gotten that brave yet.

Thanks for starting this discussion.
