Dallas is Booker T.Washington

North Dallas was a historical institution with all of the greatness being practiced by our ancestors. Mentioning Hall Street, the many shops and entertainment of that era were to us something we honored. The State/Thomas neighborhood which hosted the renown State Theater, with numerous Doctors offices of all kinds. The chicken shack where people came from all over America to taste that bird. The small but powerful congregations of Page Temple, Good Street Baptist, where the honorable Reverend Doctor Martin Luther King spoke, and who could forget Munger Avenue where Pastor King, Pastor Bird, and Reverend Joshua preached; thee were many others that we loved. What a wonderful time that was,The greatest high school of the day was the only high school for colored children, the great Booker T. Washington. Our Principal even lived in the neighborhood. The cohesiveness we shared must be shared with our children and our children's children. Ernie Banks would come back to B.T.W to speak from time to time. Do you remember how good you felt when the band would take the field at P.C. Cobb stadium, and win or lose we would all walk through the trail for our after party. Let us remember our legacy, because if we do not who will? a moment in time shall not be erased by hate, ignorance,or prejudice, but hope, truth, perseverance, humility, and of course a lot of love for one another. Let us continue to love each other with strength and courage, sprinkled with admiration for our great ancestors, who loved North Dallas, South Dallas, West Dallas, Arlington Park, Booker T. addition, White Rock, Hamilton Park, Elm Thicket, and many more additions we have probably never heard of, Because after all is said and done, Booker T.Washington Bulldogs are Dallas,Texas forever.

Rev. Adams, it was good to see you again at the DISD board meeting. I really apreciate you being the first Bulldog to speak against any efforts to change the name of our Historic Booker T. Washington High School. You did a great job in describing the historical view that obviously others are missing.

  • Rev. Adams, let me say that it is an honor to meet you.  I am from the class of '67, and forgive me for not knowing you "then," but I do know you "now"...from your writings...and now is what is prevalent, because that's all "I" have.. is "right now."  One's "age" has no "bearings" on the knowledge that "one"...such as you...and many more of our upper and lower classmates acquires through thorough investigations, research, or story telling, and simply by  "living the experience."  I read your very descriptive and elaborate message of our Historical School and all of the "surrounding areas"...many gone...destroyed...torn down to ashes...but the "spot(s)"...the "sites"...the "footprints"...the "nails, nuts and bolts"...the "plywood"...the "stained glass"...the "screened doors"...the "paintings/signs" on the buildings/walls of advertisements: Pappy Dads/Rains grocery store/Dr. Pinkston Family Doctor/ Dr. Green who lived next door to Mrs. Holloway/Ogie's Beauty shop/YWCA/Pilgrim Rest Bapt. Church-Rev. Gooden and Rev. Prince and now Rev. Wallace, etc.}...all built on this "earthly dirt" in which they all stood...can never be "covered" up...or fail to exist...as long as we remember and we talk about "what was," because "all" of the "what was" is "what is" today, from "whence" we come from.  All of these things contributed to us... being...who we are...and...whose we are and what "set" presidence" in our up brings. To state it "plainly," as described by you, that without our "ancestors"...who are we?  Those surrounding buildings and franchises, helped to build and give us "substance" in "our" make-up of who we all have become...and I think we did good!  These things must be "so" noted and must be told to our children and their off springs...as long as we breathe air, for they need to know how great our "geographic" and demographic locations helped to make History.  History is our backbone that enables us, [our "structure"], to "stand" tall and to go forward and to continue the legacy that  our "Ancestors" set.  We must continue this "HISTORICAL journey," even though sometimes the journey may not end...and for me...I love a "long" journey, because that makes it even more "challenging,"  which encourages "ME" to "Triumph" and preserver to keep our "Home Ground" alive.  Thank you for telling us to keep faith in what we know to be TRUTH, because once we stop "talking"....all is DEAD. Stay in our heads Rev. Adams...stay in our heads.  And may God Be The Glory!
